One of the things that many people in Cornwall are doing these days is remodelling their kitchens. This is because, as we have said elsewhere, the dining room has gone the way of the dinosaur. In years gone by, all homes had dining rooms which is where meals were eaten, the kitchen being simply for preparing meals, doing the washing up, and doing the laundry, although a number of homes have a second room which might just be used as a laundry room or a utility room.
Today, things have changed to the point where meals are not only cooked in the kitchen but eaten there as well. Many people also entertain guests for a meal in the kitchen.
The problem here is that kitchens in many homes are actually quite small, and not big enough for a table and chairs as well as all the other paraphernalia. The result is that, at Wood Design and Carpentry, we are frequently asked to carry out kitchen remodelling services.
Kitchen remodelling services may include building an extension in many cases, simply because the room is not big enough. However, in a lot of homes there may be an alternative, and that is to take down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. This immediately produces a large room with a lot more space. It makes a lot of sense, especially if the dining room is just being left empty and unused.
Using the kitchen for eating and entertaining developed from the time when a TV was placed on the wall so that whoever is doing the cooking – usually mum – could watch soaps and so on while cooking dinner. Then the rest of the family began to gather round because they could also watch them, and so the use of the kitchen changed.
