Cornwall has many towns and villages that have been around for, in some cases, hundreds of years. Think Bodmin, founded as a monastery in 564, or Launceston and Camelford dating from the 12th century. It follows that we have a lot of ancient buildings in the county that need loving and tender care when repairs and restoration are needed, and as traditional builders in Cornwall, at Wood Design and Carpentry Ltd we have the unique skills that are required.
Yes, we also craft quite a few new-build homes around the county, and our expertise is well-known, as we have been in the trade for over 20 years. We are also members of the Federation of Master Builders and registered with the CSCS – Construction Skills Certification Scheme, (which, technically, allows us to work at Heathrow Airport and on HS2, not that we have any plans to do so). In addition, we are certified with the SMSTS – Site Management Safety Training Scheme. So, when it comes to restoration and repair work our team has the experience that you need.
Many Different Types Of Construction
Obviously, when you are looking at buildings and homes that have been built, in some cases, hundreds of years ago, there are a myriad of different types of construction. This means that in order to work on them you need a company that has learned over the years and is capable of working with historic, and in some cases, listed buildings, each of which requires individual attention. What works perfectly well with one building may not be right at all for another.
There is a lot of work required in order to prevent water ingress into older buildings, which can result in wet rot and moulds. There are different ways of dealing with such issues, such as a cavity drain system which is perfect for internal waterproofing of existing basements. So, if an existing basement is being converted into alternative accommodation it may not be possible to install a protective barrier on the outside of the building. A Type C cavity drain system will do the job ideally, and as traditional builders in Cornwall, we can install one for you.
Many older buildings also use Mundic which is a traditional term for mining waste. Many are constructed of Mundic blocks which can contain mining waste, concrete, beach sand, aggregates, sulphites, and more. We know how to deal with such buildings and can restore them to their former glory.
